There are different symptoms of panic attacks and you need to know these symptoms to know if you are having one. Normally, there are conditions that triggers panic or anxiety but if you are not sure whether you already have a panic attack, it is better for you to know the symptoms of panic attacks.

Panic attacks could be very frightening and the symptoms can be very confusing. However, you can diagnose yourself through “Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders” by American Psychiatric Association. The following list identifies the most common symptoms of panic attacks. Experiencing four or more of following panic attack symptoms identifies what are called panic attacks:

  1. Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
  2. Sweating
  3. Feeling of choking
  4. Chest pain or discomfort
  5. Nausea or abdominal distress
  6. Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself)
  7. Fear of losing control or going crazy
  8. Trembling or shaking
  9. Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
  10. Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint
  11. Fear of dying
  12. Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations)
  13. Chills or hot flushes

Experiencing different or more panic attack symptoms than are listed above does not mean that your condition is worse or different, or that you are suffering from another un-diagnosed condition.

You should also know that some people having panic attacks are having intrusive thoughts or fears over something even without any rational reason for that fear. The fear keeps lingering in their minds leading to panic and anxiety.

Chest pain and shortness of breath is the most common of the many signs and symptoms of panic attacks. You will encounter difficulty breathing or getting enough air to breathe. You will also experience pounding rapid heartbeat and palpitation or awareness of your own heartbeat which is really annoying and uncomfortable.

It is also important that you know that these symptoms can be controlled and panic anxiety disorder is treatable. If you are experiencing one or all of the signs and symptoms of panic attacks mentioned above, the first step you need to take is to consult your doctor to confirm that you are indeed having panic attacks. Take your doctors advice. They may put you on a temporary medication. I would also however advise to explore a longer term more natural approach to curing your panic attacks.
